Welcome to OUr Class!
Hello Students and Families,
I would like to welcome you to my classroom. We are going to have a fun filled year, and participate in many meaningful activities and adventures that will expand our knowledge and abilities. In order to have fun, we must abide by the expectations and curriculum of the classroom. Here is the plan that I will put into place, beginning on the first day of school and ending on the last day of school.
My Classroom Engagement and Management Plan
- Classroom Procedures
In my classroom, there will be procedures that the students will be required to implement into their routine, there will be a procedure for the following:
1. Getting off the Bus
2. Use of Bathroom and Breaks
3. Entering the Classroom
4. Use of Computer and Appropriate Sites
5. Centers
6. Tardy for Class
7. Getting Ready for the End of Day
The procedures will be throughly explained and gone over the first two weeks of school. I will walk the students through each procedure and explain what my expectations are during each scenario of the procedure. Each procedure has a routine to follow, and all students are required to maintain appropriate behavior while following the classroom procedures. The Use of the computer and procedures will be detailed and real life situations will be given to the students.
- Behavioral Expectations
1. Come to Class prepared and ready to learn.
2. Follow Directions.
3. Keep your mind, eyes, and ears open.
4. Raise your hand before speaking.
5. Respect yourself and others.
The behavioral rules will be introduced and explained on the first day of school. My expectation is that rules are followed, and each student disciplines themselves by maintaining appropriate behavior. I expect to go over the rules and give redirection and reminders the first two weeks of class, then it will be reinforced and consequences will start to come into place.
- The Consequences of not Following Rules
1. Each student start each day with a clean slate
2. First warning for breaking rules, not following the directions, and disrupting the class. (Yellow)
3. Second warning for still not following the rules of the classroom. This card will indicate that the student will not participate in free time and will need to take a ten minute time
out. (Orange)
4. Final warning, if the student does not demonstrate following the rules, after a first and second warning, there will be a meeting with the teacher to determine the issues of what are impacting the students behavior. If necesary a letter and or a phone call will be issued.
Each student will have four cards: Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red. When the student is displaying good behavior, they will continue to stay on green. If they continue to stay on green throughout the day, they will pick form the treasure box. If the student breaks the rules in any way, they will be asked to turn a card over, which will reveal the yellow card. If the student continues to disrupt the classroom a second time they will be asked to turn the second card which will reveal the orange card. If the student continues to disrupt the class for with negative behavior, they will be asked to turn it over to the final card and reveal the red (thoughtco.com. n.d.). Documentation for the consequences will be documented in the stop light book, when the students receive a red card, they will need to write a letter stating what they did, and how they are going to not display the behavior again. I will also meet one-on-one with the student to assess the issues, and why they are displaying negative behavior. If evaluated, and the behavior is severe enough I will either send a letter home, or make a phone call to the student's parents or guardian. I will also keep record of my letters to parents and the phone call.
Second graders become more experienced writers, readers and mathematicians!!!
- Content the Students will be learning:
Writing- The students will learn to write opinion pieces, narrative pieces, and informative/explanatory pieces. They will have writing activities such as keeping a journal,
research and report, and write what you think. In addition to specific writing lessons, the students will also be required to write about math problems by explaining how
they solved it, and about topics they learn in science and social studies. The activities will help each student become a better writer.
Reading-The students will build their reading skills in second grade by reading more complex words, such as two syllable words, read words with common prefixes and
suffixes. They will also read a variety of text including fiction, non-fiction, fables, and poetry. They will learn to understand the structure of a story, and important
details of a text by knowing who, what, where, when, why and how.
Math-In order to build math skills the students will lean to add and subtract numbers from 1-20 using strategies, by the end of the year know how to add two 1 digit
numbers by memory. They will learn to solve one and two step addition and subtraction, and know the difference between odd numbers and even numbers. There is a lot of
math second grade students learn, and this is just the basics. We will also be learning how to break shapes into halves, and recognize each shape by defining each
characteristics and identifying the face, and number of angles. Some of the math activities will be shop and count, make a measure treasure hunt.
- Grading
In my class students are always expected to do their very best. I will be assessing students on a daily basis through out the day on various activities. The activities may
include quizzes, tests, projects and frequent checks for understanding. Some of the assessments I will be conducting on a continual basis is formative, and summative.
Formative will be will be an assessment used to check for understanding of the content I have presented. This may be graded but does not count towards the final grade.
Summative assessments will be graded and go towards the final grade, these assessments will include tests, quizzes, worksheets, and final projects. I will also meet with
parents or guardians if I feel the student is not meeting the second grade standards, or I feel the student needs extra help and I have a concern. Students will be graded
on the school policy grading rubric included in your back to school packet.
